Fear creates a huge distraction taking us away from the things we love, therefore only dream about. I don't believe fear arises to stop us, and is the very reason that when it does, leaves us feeling we’re missing out in life. I believe fear arises as an opportunity to open more into huge awareness.
If you look for fear, its everywhere, mostly about something that hasn't yet happened. Fear of the dark. Expressing truth to family, boss, fear of authority. An interview, job, no job. Exams. Fear of driving, a passenger. Fear of each other, friends, no friends. Of hurting a loved one. Fears of what others think of us. Drowning, heights, spiders, the future… the list is endless. That's endless opportunities to open more into huge awareness.
I’m often nervous when teaching a group of new students, speaking in public, and jumping out of aeroplanes! For sure its terrifying, but its also wonderful and offers deeper insights and opportunities to open more into huge awareness.
So how do I function when all systems in the body are fighting against me to stop the feeling of fear and nervousness? Healthy & very much a necessity FEAR is a tool built in our system to save our lives. Heightening our senses and expanding awareness (relative to my previous post), fear, if approached correctly, becomes an object of meditation since it triggers alertness and focus.
What I have learned is not, how do I stop fear, but how can I embrace in order to transcend fear, to make friends with this fight so I can make conscious choices and decisions. Learning to relax is obvious, but there is something else…
There is a technique in yoga I practice and teach, however its not seen in the common practises. Any yogi who performs this will know its huge, transformational effects. It not only transcends fear but nervousness, a lack in confidence, drive, feeling dull, depression, frustration, dis-eases of the gut, back issues & more. During this transcendence, thoughts purify and lift our sprits so we can flow in our truth.
The technique is Uddiyana Bandha & might put a smile on your face when I tell you it translates to FLY UPWARD. (Im not suggesting you do this to skydive!) UB lifts heavy moods of sadness, grief & depression because of its deep internal massage stimulating the vagus nerve (connected to the serotonin levels in the brain). But much more than this. With its alchemical process on our subtle bodies opening the heart, UB is a real life changer, the refinement of energies are THAT dynamic and radical.
My partner often says “The Gift of Flight… set yourself Free,” while this is partially true of human flight (in a 55 second free-fall) it is totally true of UB since it raises our vibration, and with practise is almost irreversible.
I perform Uddianya Bandha when sensations of fear, nervousness & lowly feeling overwhelm or intensify.
What are your fears and do they stop you?
