A Silent Awakening

Niamh Kavanagh • November 1, 2019

I remember when a child (what I now know as) being in different states of meditation. Pure being-ness, untouched thoughts… untainted.. expanded, high quality of clarity, openness. Only back then, without name or a label.

Somewhere in between now and then, personality took shape. Many external influences added to that personal ‘make-up’, you know, the cultural differences in upbringing, play-school, friends, education. The different levels of growth during a touchy-teenage phase from ‘no-one in the world understands me’ and ‘knowing it all’ (ha!) to becoming a young adult. The new sensations exploring sexuality. Falling in and out of love, or lost in the fantasy of it! The first home, job, choosing a career. The make or break in friendships and relationships. The varying insecurities of “Do I look fat in this dress?” to those stolen moments in time worrying about bills, worrying about this and that. Figuring and learning often through making mistakes, the traumas that arise… and then, identifying with these influences as reality. All this and more before social media even began. What a distraction from my being-ness!

Back to those earlier years, I remember listening to the sound of motorcars that would speed by, listening, how sound sped out of utter silence only to disappear back into its silence again. The sound itself amplifying more silence: a pure, untouched awareness - sense and feeling - of deep peace expanding beyond my physical outline. Simply by listening, as sound comes and goes, drifting in and out of the silent self. Now as a meditator, I understand the sound of the motorcar-effect having pushed my hearing beyond its physical margins expanding awareness. Created a kind of ‘stepping back’, the same way as watching thoughts that come and go, where there sits a silence in-between, a mental void, before and after EVERY single one.

And life being the funny way it is, in that we are born with true nature, which is pure bliss and unconditional thought, later develops a personality (based on whatever life experiences) good, bad, happy, sad, see-saw duality of thought and emotion presenting issues, challenges, pressures, stress, tension, depression only to then all be undone by our true nature, or what I now know as or find and experience in meditation.

Meditation can be so powerful in removing conditions of a disturbed, distracted, unbalanced or simply, the over-thinking mind. Sitting in a correct position, for example, a pyramid shape helps lift energy while using the mind to apply simple exercises - preventing a re-occurring wayward thinking - are both the set-up and preparation to cultivate meditative states. At some point the mind falls somewhere in between the physical world and the unknown, and it is here where the over thinking & fighting thoughts dissolve, a new mind arises to intensify and bring forward its effect. Silence. Just as a new born baby awakens with fresh eyes, free from tensions and stress.

Work hard and don't give up with this, you’ll return back to that inherent bliss inside, happy or sad there always ALWAYS exists, the underlying silence, state of being-ness.

PEARL The light of truth cannot be seen just as a pearl remains inside its shell . I was truly delighted when I realised this title. Not only the protagonist's name, PEARL holds many meaning and association such as the light of the full moon, fruits, wisdoms... the awakening of consciousness. While a black pearl represents tears and sadness, and also the street name for opiates; black pearl. This story is full of twists & turns. PEARL tells a poetic sense of betrayal and deception transcending the shadows of the human psyche. She not only finds herself through her darkest hours but finds how destiny meets her. The Subtle Body

This last year has taken such a tremendous toll on the emotional body leaving residual stuff beneath our skin and in the air from impact and intrusion. Free-falling through uncharted emotions - estranged feelings of dis-comfort, unease, worry - about our future. Upset & hurt. Of things said and unspoken via the domain of fear, threat and survival - leaving unresolved issues. Albeit it frightening blessings arise when pushed beyond such limits - it is here we can somehow open the door of transparency and expand into an ever widening field of awareness. This opportunity - a configuration of body mind spirit, is Divine connection and is where offerings of healings just happen; if open to the opportunities. Yoga for self healing is a unique and non judgmental approach that eases into those tender, vulnerable spots; developing compassion. Deeply soothe for release in body, mind & emotions to be open to opportunities of healing and find a NEW anchoring point within.

Healing Heart

Tomorrow’s yoga session at 830am is dedicated to the last Full Moon of 2020. A sensitive phase as She (the keeper of feminine energy in spirituality, referred to as Mother Moon) aligns with the watery sign of Cancer. Attuning to the energy of the Full Moon guides us beyond the swell of emotions into our true core where we can open with compassionate attentiveness while edging-in. An immersion that frees-up the most fragile of feelings, including those hidden ones. The purpose is to let go for a full-on release. This may require forgiveness of one self, or others and taking deep breathes of acceptance for the most tender spots. Breathing old, destructive ways or pure-grief out, tears may be felt in those longing exhales freeing a heavy heart. It will be in these emotional waves that’ll wash and soothe the shore of y/our being. If you'd like to join us online, email: hridayayogauk@gmail.com for details to register.

Our fragmented world.. what impact is this having on you and your communities? It is important to remain calm so we can support each other. It’s from this place of rest we can start to re-create & reform community spirit in ways not yet known to us. This can be difficult to sense, visualise -never mind materialise - when emotions and thoughts are distorted and in a victim state and thrown off balance by loss, confusion, frightened, lack of trust, causing blind reactions. In a time where our future has never been so uncertain let’s journey together through these fragile veils to enter the subtle, inner-world & go beyond senses for healing, balance & especially courage since life continues fragmenting around us. And since none of us have the answers. Yoga & The Subtle Body is an 8 week journey starting Thursday 15th October offering guidance for healing and courage. Through yoga movement, dance, breath-work, blessings, meditations we’ll explore these hidden strengths each week. Expect to: • Step back to see clearer, helping remove blockages. • Recognise sensations of your inner world. • Imbue the infinite power of the heart with pain of the past, of letting go. • Transmute fears into positive actions. • Integrate inner healing to help outer worlds for positivity & creativity. • Commit to regular practise (tuning inward regularly becomes more natural). • Through self healing, become a beacon of light for others. YOU can be in balance during this Global change. Let's do it together.
